2020 // Word // Propagate

Propagate.

I love the imagery of the birth of new plants and the careful cultivation from gardeners.
When someone propagates, they pour love and time into creating an optimum environment for the success of the new life. The plant grows itself. The gardener does not will the plant to grow, but empowers the plant through provision and cultivation. Last year we did a lot of pruning. We cut out a lot of unhealthy and some healthy things in our lives. This year, we are taking the good and propagating it.

Propagate.

This is my word for 2020.

Propagation takes time.
Beautiful things to not happen over night. They are eagerly awaited and blissfully treasured. Beautiful things do no need to tell people they are beautiful.

Propagation is a hurry up and wait process.
I have a feeling that I will have a lot of rushing to a yield this year. As our family begins some very exciting big new things, it will be a lot of sowing without a lot of reaping. Timing and God's will is everything.

Propagation starts small.
As I write my goals for this year, I think about the daily habits that will achieve those goals. It's not about starting a brand new multimillion dollar business or to be raising children who win Nobel prizes. It's about teaching kindness, finding beauty, cultivating curiosity, and seeking truth in all circumstances. One act of kindness or truthfulness can change the world. Curiosity in the hands of a child can grow into one of the most important tools they will take into adulthood: creativity.

Propagation starts with cutting off healthy things.
I think sometimes we look at our lives and recognize all of the unhealthy habits and forget that sometimes we need to cut out good things too. Sometimes, something is thriving, healthy, and doing good, but in order to grow more, we have to cut back and not just the bad and unhealthy. Sometimes we have to recognize the seasons and cut back on the good. We have to acknowledge when good things have come to an end. Good things have seasons and it is better to willfully cut them off and let them grow than to keep them too long and watch them wither and die.

This year I will propagate gentleness and peace in my heart.
I will propagate love in my home.
I will propagate the Gospel in my church.
I will propagate community in my city.

I will encourage growth of those around me, even when it is painful and takes a bit of pruning.
